For years, I was the helper, the peacekeeper, the woman who worked hard to keep everyone else comfortable. I could recognize what others needed, but struggled to give my own feelings and desires the same attention.
During my 17-year marriage, I often felt unseen. Gradually, I began to understand how much of my life I had shaped around being accepted, keeping the peace, and waiting for someone else to choose me.
Learning to choose myself changed the relationship I have with my own voice, my worth, and the people around me.
Today, I support women who are ready to make space for themselves, too.
Across three Camino journeys, walking 2,340 kilometers across the Camino Francés, the rugged Northern Way, and the coastal winds of the Portuguese route, walking became a practice of listening to my body, my thoughts, and the parts of myself I had learned to silence.
The trail brought familiar patterns into view: the inner critic, the reluctance to ask for help, and the habit of looking outside myself for reassurance. Step by step, I began responding to myself with greater compassion and trusting my own choices.
That experience became Sacred Miles on the Camino, my memoir about a 779-kilometer walk across Spain and the inner journey from self-abandonment to self-worth.
The relationship that changed most was the one I have with myself.
